A large dog at eight is genuinely old — the equivalent of a small dog at thirteen or fourteen. Appetite drops, joints are stiff, and getting up to eat is more effort than it was.

Refrigerate any opened pouch and use within 24 hours. Serve at room temperature rather than straight from the fridge — cold wet food smells of almost nothing and gets refused. If she's on wet food only, give her something to chew or clean her teeth, because wet food does no mechanical work on them. Raise her bowl if standing to eat is uncomfortable, and warm the food slightly.
