Five is middle-aged for a big dog. It comes round quickly.
Large breeds age on a different clock. Five is genuinely middle-aged for a 40 kg dog — the equivalent of a small dog at eight or nine — and the grey muzzle usually arrives before anyone has thought of her as anything but young.
This is built for that earlier turn. Glucosamine and chondroitin continue the joint support, with tea polyphenols at 150 mg/kg and borage oil added against oxidative ageing. Crude ash drops to 5.9% from the adult food's 6.7%, easing the mineral load, while fibre rises to 2.6% with psyllium to keep a slowing gut comfortable. Protein stays at 26% — an ageing large dog loses muscle readily and cutting protein accelerates it. For dogs five and over, 26–44 kg.

Store in a cool, dry place, sealed. Use within six weeks of opening; decant the 15 kg. Keep her moving — two shorter walks beat one long one, and swimming is excellent for sore hips if you have access to it. A raised, supportive bed off a cold floor makes a visible difference. Yearly bloods from five, and mention any new stiffness to your vet rather than writing it off as age.
