Broader cover than original NexGard — adds worm and heartworm prevention.
A monthly chewable that widens on original NexGard's cover by combining two actives — afoxolaner (the same isoxazoline as original NexGard, for fleas and ticks) with milbemycin oxime, a macrocyclic lactone that adds heartworm prevention and control of the three main gastrointestinal worms: roundworm, hookworm and whipworm. One tablet, once a month, covers all of it — worth choosing over the original formulation for any dog that also needs worm and heartworm protection rather than flea/tick cover alone.
As with original NexGard, the weight band on the pack has to match the dog's current weight — recheck it at each purchase rather than assuming last time's band still fits.
Active ingredients: Afoxolaner + milbemycin oxime, scaled by weight band
Give the same day every month for the heartworm-prevention side to keep working properly — unlike flea/tick cover, where a slightly late dose is a minor gap, heartworm prevention depends on regular monthly timing to keep killing off the larval stage before it matures. If a dose is missed by more than a few days, get back on schedule and mention it at the next vet visit rather than waiting for the annual check. Collie, Australian Shepherd and other herding breeds: stick to the labelled dose for the weight band — don't be tempted to round up "to be safe," since milbemycin oxime is the drug class linked to sensitivity in dogs carrying the MDR1 mutation common in these breeds. If a heartworm test hasn't been done recently in an area where heartworm is present, ask the vet about testing before starting, since giving a preventive to an already-infected dog isn't the same as using it preventively.
