A small or medium puppy does most of her growing in under a year, and she does it on a digestive system that has only just met solid food. Karoo keeps the list short — chicken, lamb, rice and not much else — which is a real advantage when you're trying to work out what upsets her.

Protein at 27% with 14.5% fat and 375 kcal per 100 g covers a fast growth phase. DHA at 0.25% supports brain and retina development, which has a deadline, and lactose-reduced milk powder eases the transition off her mother. Calcium at 1.5% and phosphorus at 0.9% are balanced for bone laid down quickly, with glucosamine and chondroitin already in the mix.

Looking after it

Store in a cool, dry place, sealed. Use within six weeks of opening. Read from the weight you expect her to reach as an adult, not what she weighs now — that's the commonest feeding mistake with a puppy. Keep her lean while she's growing; a fat puppy grows into a dog with worse joints. Limit stairs, jumping and long runs until the skeleton has set.
